Improved Micro Rain Radar Rainfall Measurements using Doppler Spectra Post-Processing
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Micro Rain Radar 2 (MRR) is a cost effective, minimum maintenance oriented, portable radar system used for conducting precipitation research. This system is prone to several draw backs such as lack of a sophisticated post-processing algorithm to improve its sensitivity, noise due to radar receiver and the lack of high quality Doppler radar moments. In this project work, we propose an improved processing method which is especially suited for rainfall observations and provides reliable values of effective reflectivity, Doppler velocity and spectral width. The proposed method is a noise removal based on recognition of the most significant peak. A dynamic dealiasing routine allows observations even if the Nyquist velocity range is exceeded. The proposed method exploits the full potential of MRR’s hardware and substantially enhances the use of Micro Rain Radar for studies of precipitation.

Improved Micro Rain Radar snow measurements using Doppler spectra post-processing
The Micro Rain Radar 2 (MRR) is a compact Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) system that operates at 24 GHz. The MRR is a low-cost, portable radar system that requires minimum supervision in the field. As such, the MRR is a frequently used radar system for conducting precipitation research. Current MRR drawbacks are the lack of a sophisticated post-processing algorithm to improve its se...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Neural Network Scheme for Radar Rainfall Estimation from WSR-88D Observations
Recent research has shown that neural network techniques can be used successfully for ground rainfall estimation from radar measurements. The neural network is a nonparametric method for representing the relationship between radar measurements and rainfall rate. The relationship is derived directly from a dataset consisting of radar measurements and rain gauge measurements. The effectiveness of...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE A Combined Wind Profiler and Polarimetric Weather Radar Method for the Investigation of Precipitation and Vertical Velocities
A method is presented by which combined S-band polarimetric weather radar and UHF wind profiler observations of precipitation can be used to extract the properties of liquid phase hydrometeors and the vertical velocity of the air through which they are falling. Doppler spectra, which contain the air motion and/or fall speed of hydrometeors, are estimated using the vertically pointing wind profi...
متن کاملComparison of radar data versus rainfall data
Doppler radar data are increasingly used in rainfall-runoff synthesis studies, perhaps due to radar data availability, among other factors. However, the veracity of the radar data are often a topic of concern. In this paper, three Doppler radar outcomes developed by the United States National Weather Service at three radar sites are examined and compared to actual rain gage data for two separat...
متن کاملRainfall Estimation with a Polarimetric Prototype of WSR-88D
As part of the Joint Polarization Experiment (JPOLE), the National Severe Storms Laboratory conducted an operational demonstration of the polarimetric utility of the Norman, Oklahoma (KOUN), Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D). The capability of the KOUN radar to estimate rainfall is tested on a large dataset representing different seasons and different types of rain. A dense gaug...
